What to look for in a painting quote

What brand of paint will be used?

If your quote doesn’t have these basic details, it’s a BIG red flag! Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Behr; What kind of paint are they quoting you for?

What quality of paint is being used on each surface?

Each brand has different grades of paint available. Some contractors will not tell you exactly what quality of paint is being used and rather just state a brand of paint without detailing the grade of paint. Be sure of exactly what quality of paint is to be used and always verify once the work has started.

How many coats will be applied on each surface?

Some contractors will be vague with the details and try to get away with a one coat paint job. The untrained eye might not notice that a second coat is needed and you could get stuck with a subpar paint job.

What is the application method for each surface?

Brushing, rolling or spraying? You should know what the contractor is quoting for so you can know what results to expect.

What prep work is included?

Are they going to sand and scrape the walls? Patch nail holes? Take off switch plates and put them back? Move furniture etc. and put back in place? How will they cover the floors and furniture? Do they take the TV’s and window treatments down and put them back? Wipe down walls and trim for dust before paint is applied? Most contractors surprisingly don’t give any details making it hard to compare quotes. Be sure to get the whole process in writing so you can be sure of what you are paying your hard earned money for.
